Evolutions in Art – a Labor of Love
I have always loved art, creating art, and making things. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching Bob Ross paint, and I thought I might like to be a painter. I used oils first, then acrylics. I kept painting random different things, but never really found my own style. The closest I got was taking photos of people and then painting the subject as something else, like a mermaid or circus performer. Periodically, I would take a break from painting to make jewelry and other crafty things, or work on drawing comics.
Comics have been a big part of my life for many years. I would take a novel that I liked and try my hand at illustrating a chapter or two. I also kept drawing covers that I liked, again trying to find a style of my own. Eventually, I did get to draw a variant cover for “Stabbity Ever After” #1 from Scout Comics. I drew characters from the book in an homage to the Wolverine #1 Vol 2 cover. I was officially a comic artist! Once again, I really enjoyed the “mashup art” of taking a character and putting them in a different situation. I was on the right track.
Drawing robots was part of my process either as a warm-up exercise, or to work out poses, or just to have something to doodle that wasn’t serious. In the beginning, they were just for me. My little therapy bots, I called them Love Bots. I gave them hats and props and wigs. Then, I started recreating famous comics covers with Bots in costume. Batbot was born! Along with Botgirl, Jokebot, and all the rest. I have gifted prints of some of these to the artists who created the original covers and they have all loved them so far.
